Univ. Doz. Dr. med. Georg S. Kobinia
In 1986, Dr. Kobinia founded the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Klagenfurt (Austria), which later became the cardio-thoracic and vascular surgical unit at the Klagenfurt Clinic.
In 2010, he founded the stem cell therapy group in Vienna (Austria).
With more than 6000 open heart operations and 2500 stem cell operations in 50 years of medical work, he can look back on a long and broad experience.
Dr. Kobinia is an Austrian surgeon who started his career at the Hospital of Lainz (Klinik Hietzing) and later he moved to Linz where he focused his area of expertise on thoracic and vascular surgery. He described the subcutaneous implant of the crural bypass as well as the implantation of endothelium cells to synthetic prostheses using fibrin glue, a method which has been implemented in various other hospitals.
During his stay as the Evarts A. Graham fellow of the „American Association for Thoracic Surgery“ at the Massachusetts General Hospital at the University of Harvard, Boston (USA), Dr. Kobinia wrote his professorial dissertation about the prostaglandin metabolism of the heart during cardioplegic arrest. This fellowship is granted once a year to one surgeon worldwide.
After his return in 1986, Dr. Kobinia has been nominated as the head of the new department of cardio-thoracic surgery at the Hospital Klagenfurt (today’s Klinikum Klagenfurt). There he achieved the board certification for cardiac and thoracic surgery. Under Dr. Kobinia’s management there have been numerous clinical developments. Due to his experiences gained in Boston, Dr. Kobinia arranged the electronic data entry for surgical and clinical areas. At this time transportation of written clinical data into electronical data bases was an emerging field and a great deal was started in Klagenfurt.
Together with Warren Hancock, the inventor of biological heart valves, he developed a stentless aortic heart valve. The use of this heart valve was simplified using a new suture method with three sutures on the top of the commissures, a method which paved the way for the percutaneous insertion of aortic heart valves.
Dr. Kobinia continued his research in the field of the traumatic aortic rupture and its treatment via retrograde perfusion through the heart-lung machine. Furthermore, the successful execution of aortic arch surgeries in hypothermia and the initiation of a program for the resuscitation of frozen and drowned patients via heart-lung machine was performed. The result of this research work was the description of the successful resuscitation of a drowned child whose heart action has stopped for more than 30 minutes. This was the first clinical resuscitation of impaired lungs using prolonged perfusion of the lungs with the heart-lung machine. It showed that recovery acutely impaired lung tissue is possible. This publication was listed under the top 10 publications worldwide in this year. Dr. Kobinia engaged himself successfully for the use of video endoscopy as an early treatment method for pneumothorax.
